Commissioner Billy Rader joined a delegation of officials from across the Gulf region in Mobile last year to convince Amtrak to reinitiate the Sunset Limited.
The service used to run between Jacksonville and New Orleans until Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005 destroying many of the tracks.
The commissioner agreed to allow Rader to send a letter on behalf of the city, supporting the return of the service.
"So, we all want to unite together and let the senate and congress know they this is important. It could be important to our local economy. It could bring more tourists in, tourists from foreign countries even."
Panama City would not be financially obligated if Amtrak decided to restore service. The Sunset Limited had stops in Tallahassee, Chipley, and Crestview. Walton County officials are pushing Defuniak Springs to replace the Crestview stop.
