Deer Point Lake was originally lowered on December 3rd and has remained well below normal levels ever since. The lower water level exposes weeds and algae to cold winter weather, helping kill it off for the next season.
The original plans were to begin raising the water levels on February 15th. However, because of the warm winter, the drawndown will continue an extra week this year.
"Ff we get freezing temperatures this weekend than we will kill some additional weeds. And it will give folks an opportunity to continue the clean up effort around there piers," said public information officer Valerie Sale.
Only freezing temperatures can quickly kill off the weeds. Overnight forecasts for this weekend are just above freezing.
