Bay County Voter Purge Process Continues Despite Federal Warning

Two weeks ago, the US Justice Department ordered the State of Florida to stop purging non-citizens from voter roles. Some counties have stopped, others have not. Bay County is one of those moving forward with the process.

Last month, the State of Florida alerted Bay County Supervisor of Elections Mark Andersen to seven possible non-citizens on the voting role in Bay County. So Andersen is trying to contact them by certified mail to see if they need to be removed as registered voters. But Andersen says the process isn't just for non-citizens.

"There's a whole number of things that have to occur to get a confidence level that that voter is in fact ineligible and we do that for felons, illegal addresses, non citizens, mentally incompetent..." he said.

With a primary election coming up in August, the federal government ordered Florida officials to stop the process, saying it's illegal to remove voters within 90 days of a federal election.

"Equal treatment under the law is what every voter should expect. But then that key word comes to "voter". Are you a voter if you're a non-citizen? Are you a voter if you've committed a felony and not had your rights restored?" Andersen said.

Right now, Andersen's main focus is the seven non-citizens. And he says several of them have participated in recent elections. And if you think 1-vote doesn't count, just look at the 2006 school board race.

"There was almost, in the neighborhood of 50-thousand voters and that race came down to initially one vote difference and the final was two votes difference between the two candidates. So tell me how important one is."

I do not believe the report is correct, in saying the feds said to stop purging "noncitizens." Reported in the Miami Herald: "Justice, for its part, has told the Scott administration that the way the state is going about the purge — using state driver’s license records, which are infamously outdated — is wrong and that attempting to purge voter lists so close to the August primary is a violation of federal laws." Read more here: Miami Herald: "Of the 2,700 potential noncitizens that Mr. Detzner’s department has identified statewide, more than 500 already have been found to be U.S. citizens." Read more here:\ As for Scott blaming the Department of Homeland Security for not handing over data - "DHS, meanwhile, makes a strong case that it is focused on border security not voter legitimacy." Read more here: We are a nation of laws. SOEs are not above the law. Contrary to the recommendation of the attorney for the state association of SOEs, Andersen has chosen to violate the law to cater to tea partiers, who would be insulted if they were true patriots. He is running for relection and believes he has to appeal to tea partiers because he faces a Republican opponent.

So the state let them know they had 7 no-citizens and they are trying to correct this issue. The state lets them know within that 90 day limit. Why after the time they say your not suppose to purge. It needs to be done to stop those that DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO VOTE, for whatever reason. One vote that is illegal is one to many.

I was very angry when I found my name as a registered Democrat on a local web site.I am a registered Independant who has voted for(who I thought)would be the best person from both parties many, many, times.I do not believe either party has all the answers,so voting a straight ticket always seemed quite uninformed to me.I have seen the commercials with Mark saying that my new voting cards will arrive in the mail shortly.I certainly hope mine does.If it doesn't,I will think that the G.O.P had a hand in the purge, and vote for Obama in the November election.I did not vote for Obama last time.I voted for a war hero.I did not vote for Scott and if I am purged,I will think that he is responsible for trying to remove voters that didn't vote for him.

bob, you were doing good for a few say that your name was as a democrat on a local web site...I'd be mad to be called a democrat also but QUALIFY THIS WITH THE NAME OF THE say your registered Independent so why worry, unless it says it in The Supervisor of Elections book you don't have a problem....seems like your just trying to stir the pot and your a democrat in sheep's clothing....Also anonymous @ 6:36 you need to adjust your tin foil cap a little to the right, our black helicopter can't get the mind reading ray gun to pull anything out.

If purging means doing the right thing and protect the integrity of the votering system, then why would it be illegal to do so. I smell a rat.

So let me get this straight.... Not only did we only have the choices between Liar 1 and Liar 2... Now they're rigging it so only Liar 2 get's votes? Somebody is going to have to do something about this.

It doesn't matter, there is absolutely no choice in the presidential race. If you really think an argument over whether or not homosexuals can use the term "marriage" on legal documentation is a substantive difference, there might be 1 difference between Obama and Romney, and Ron Paul... Paul was just a stooge for Romney. We haven't had a choice in the presidential race in the past many years. He who prints the money controls the government. Actually we're kinda aggravated with this tired scenario, and steps are being taken to correct it. I just hope nobody minds given the fact the government was overthrown years ago by financial conspirators who run the U.S. as a wage slave nation... I hope the Stockholm Syndrome most Americans have won't blind them to who's on their side (hint it isn't politicians, corporations, financial institutions, or the media).

If you think there is no choice between Romney and Obama, you have not been paying attention to Romeny. He says he will repeal laws put in place to keep the financial industry from doing the same things that led to the 2008 recession. He also will repeal laws protecting our health from air polluters. There is much more. You need to find various sources of news and learn the facts.

I agree elections are for legal voters. If your not legally to vote in our county or state then stay out of the booth.
