Marine Charged with Murder of Former Bay County Deputy

JACKSONVILLE, North Carolina A Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune is charged with the murder of a former Bay County deputy.

Police in Jacksonville, North Carolina were called to a home around 3:45 a.m. where they found 39-year-old Dale Smith dead from a gunshot wound.

Smith worked for the Bay County Sheriff's office from 2001-2006.

"He was a good deputy, a good friend and a talented musician who expressed his faith through music," said Lt. Mike Purvis.

Smith played piano, sang and wrote gospel and patriotic songs. The YouTube video below is Smith performing one of those songs, "God Bless The Soldiers," in April 2012.

Smith also worked for the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s office from 2006-2009.

Cpl. Benjamin Marisic, who owns the home where Smith's body was found, is charged with Smith’s murder. The 24-year-old Marine is being held without bond pending a first appearance on Monday.

Police say Smith worked as a civilian contractor at Camp Lejeune, but have not released any information about a possible motive.

(*** Story note: The victim is not the same Dale Smith who is a long time law enforcement officer in Bay County. That Dale Smith is currently a bailiff at the Bay County Courthouse.)
