Bay Medical Center is laying off 27 employees. The Panama City hospital says huge funding cuts from Medicare and Medicaid forced it to make the changes.

“It is a sad time for us,” says President and CEO Steve Johnson. “This is a great group of employees and we will be doing everything we can to help them find other employment.”

All 27 of the positions being eliminated are in non-clinical areas. Most of them are construction workers.

“Since the hospital completed the tower and other major renovation projects, we could no longer justify having a large construction department,” Johnson said.

The hospital also announced plans to close the on-site child care center after the first of the year. Hospital executives say only 30 of the 1,850 employees used the service. The facility would also need costly upgrades to meet state requirements so it could continue to operate.
