Bristol- Most of the candidates on Tuesday's ballots have just been trying to win a position. But one candidate in Liberty county would do much more than that if she were to be elected.

Dating back to the 1800's, a woman has never served on the Liberty County school board. District 3 candidate, Tina Tharpe said she wanted to change that. But, Tharpe also said, she's not as interested in making history as she was in opening minds.

"A female can also bring different perspectives to the board versus just a males perspective" Tharpe told us.

"I think its important because as we move forward as a country, not only as a state, equality and representation from all people of all types, creeds, races, gender- needs to be an issue that's brought up no matter how rural the county" said Tharpe's brother, Patrick Walden.

But Tharpe was not oblivious to the fact that voters could make history if they elected her.

"As this has kind of unfolded, I started thinking about that side of things and you know, I'm nobody. I'm just a normal woman who's married and has kids, and works, and is raising a family. And to think about making a little history here, even in this small county, that may help somebody say, 'well if she can do it, in a town where it's never been done before, maybe I can do something big'" Tharpe explained.

She was running as one of three candidates in the District 3 race. For one of them to win Tuesday, they would need a 50% plus one vote. Otherwise, the top two vote candidates advance to a run off in November.
