Local Businesses Get Ready for Spring Break

Each year Panama City Beach goes from a quiet snowbird destination, to the loud and rowdy Spring Break capital of the world in just a matter of a few weeks.

Although the first big week is still a month away, local businesses are already preparing.

The local Workforce Center said the tourism has the biggest impact on creating new jobs during Spring Break.

Margaritaville in Pier Park is looking for as many as 100 people. "We need a lot of people, servers, dishwashers, line cooks, prep cooks, hosts, bartenders, a little bit of everything," said Lindsey Werts, a shift manager at Margaritaville.

The restaurant is holding a hiring fair from January 28th through the 31st, from 9am to 3pm to interview prospective employees.

"If you're interested, come in, we're hiring all positions, getting ready to show spring breakers some Spring Break fun," Werts said.

Some of the other Pier Park shops are also hiring, just on a much smaller scale.

"Life is Good" is hiring an additional 3 to 4 employees.

"We won't start hiring until mid February,” said Ashley Hackney, the store manager. “Then hope to be fully staffed by March, the beginning of Spring Break."

They are also receiving new merchandise that will appeal to spring breakers.

"We're receiving new shipments daily; we're bringing in a whole bunch of brand new prints for 2013,” said Hackney. “The store will be brighter and ready for everyone who's coming in 2013."

According to The Tourist Development Council, the average spring breaker spent $450 during their 5 night stay in 2012.

The average group of 5-breakers spent a little more than $2,300. $700 of that went to food, bars and stores.

The TCD has also approved additional funds for the city and county to help with increased security and safety for spring breakers.
