Bay County Commissioner Mike Thomas wants to ask for new legislation for moped drivers on congested roadways in Bay County.

In Tuesday morning's meeting, he brought up the number of people riding mopeds and scooters through heavy spring break traffic without a motorcycle endorsement.

According to the DMV, to ride a moped 50 cc or less in Florida, you do not need a motorcycle endorsement, only a Class E license which is a motorcycle-only license.

Thomas wants to look at ways to possibly tighten up the rules to keep the local roads safe especially in busy times of the year like spring break and summer.

"We ask for some legislative assistance that people be required to have a driver's license for all motor vehicles on the highway, a motorcycle license, an endorsement for bikes," said Thomas.

Commissioners agreed to contact legislators from this district about the issue.
