A few local restaurants are donating their leftover food to local food banks.

Olive Garden, Red Lobster, and Longhorn all participate in the program in conjunctoin with the Darden Harvest Program. Last year, the program donated 1.4 million pounds of food in Florida.

Locally, the Olive Garden donates its food to the Panama City Rescue Mission.

"As far as how much is donated on a weekly basis, some weeks we may have 30 pounds of food that will go, another week we may have 120 pounds, hopefully not very often at that," said Olive Garden General Manager Patricia Adkins, "we try to predict exactly how much we'll need for the day's business."

The extra food is frozen and then stored for pick up where it is then processed at the Panama City Rescue Mission.

I've heard that most places destroy things instead of giving to to shelters, food banks or other social service agencies... so much waste... I've even heard K-Mart destroys clothes with cutting and or bleach before throwing it out so nothing can be reused... how sick is that.... if it's true.

That is an awesome program Darden has to donate their food to programs locally!! My children were so upset to watch Krispy Creme just pitch tray upon tray of donuts into a trash can one night! When they asked the employee why didn't they donate to hungry people locally they were told that they weren't allowed to from corporate and required to destroy it. What a waste when people in our own community go to bed hungry every night!
