Looking For A Police Chief

Mexico Beach City Council members are deciding how they'll select a new police chief.

65-people have applied for the vacancy created when embattled Chief Brad Hall retired a few months ago. Wednesday night City Administrator Chris Hubbard recommended his top-6 applicants from the pool, which included the Interim Chief, Captain Glenn Norris.

While some on the council are supportive of Norris, they also say they want to look at all 65-applications. They'll decide on the selection process next Tuesday.

Mexico Beach Mayor Al Cathey is a big supporter of promoting from within when possible. "My perspective from our community is, and as the mayor and a member of the city council, is that, when you have somebody inside, and you have somebody that can handle the job, that's part of what you hire somebody to do, to move up the ladder. Captain Norris has done a remarkable job filling in under some adverse conditions. No question, you folks are very much aware of some of the things that we've been dealing with."

Council members also selected a set of plans for the new city hall building. Of the 4-options, they chose number-2, which will include a park and plenty of parking spaces. The next step will be choosing an architect.

The new city hall will be built on the site of the historic Parker house, which belonged to Mexico Beach's founding family. The city bought the house with plans to use it as city hall, but it burned down last year.

And the council is also negotiating with the Catholic Church for the old church property on 15th Street as a possible site for a new Mexico Beach police station. But the property is just outside of the city limits, so it would have to be annexed.
