The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man they say tried to hold up a convenience store and then called his mom for a ride home.

Three days before Christmas, deputies say 22-year-old Zach Howard of Niceville walked into the Thumbs-Up Convenience Store at 4200 Range Road, wearing a long black coat, hoodie and blue jeans. He told the clerk he had a gun and demanded money. The clerk showed him an empty cash register drawer and Howard left empty handed, walked to Winn Dixie and called his mom.

Deputies arrested Howard over the weekend and charged him with one count of robbery.

Howard told deputies he didn’t go to the store intending to rob it. He says he just came up with the idea on his way there. Howard also claims he never had a weapon.
