PANAMA CITY- This week's Golden Apple winner teaches 6th grade Language Arts at Merritt Brown Middle School. Mary Sue Adams was nominated by a student who writes: "I think she is a great teacher. She is my favorite teacher in 6th grade."
"She is patient, supportive, innovative, who doesn't want a teacher like that?" said Principal Charlotte Marshall. It's a long list of accolades for someone in just her second year of teaching. "I loved writing in school, so it's awesome to see them learn how to write," said Ms. Adams. She relates to her students on their terms and is genuinely interested in what interests them. "This age group just fits me perfectly," said Ms. Adams
Students say she's made all the difference in the way they view writing. "She has turned it upside down. She has made it fun and not boring," said Elizabeth Mullins, who nominated Ms. Adams. "She tells us just write what you think about it, don't pretend to be anybody or anything," said Elizabeth.
"Sixth grade is a difficult transitional year in middle school. Kids are finding their way so it's important they have a teacher who is nurturing, yet positive and supportive. They get that from Mary Sue Adams," said Principal Marshall. "She is a great teacher and I just love being in her class," said Keaton Spiva. "Even when I am having the worst day at Merritt Brown, when I'm in a bad mood, she always makes me smile," said Elizabeth.
"Ms. Adams is just such an amazing teacher," said 6th grader Callie Patronis. Congratulations to Ms. Mary Sue Adams, this week's Golden Apple award winning teacher. "Ms. Adams is awesome!" exclaimed the class.
