Forecasters are keeping close watch on a strengthening low pressure system off the Yucatan Peninsula.

The National Hurricane Center gives it a 30 percent chance of developing into a tropical system in the next 48 hours and a 50 percent chance over the next five days. The next named storm would Jerry.

The system is expected to track west to northwest over the next few days as moves into the southern Gulf of Mexico.

After that, forecasters are uncertain is the system will be steered by the same high pressure ridge over the Gulf of Mexico that pushed Hurricane Ingrid to the west.

If that ridge weakens, the system could take a more northerly course.
