Mexico Beach- Mexico Beach City Council Members are joining in on the on-going debate over so-called internet cafes. Thursday they discussed passing an ordinance that would temporarily ban them.

It would specifically place a 180 day moratorium on issuing a license, permit, or approval of any such business. According to the ordinance, violators would face up to a $500 fine or up to 60 days in jail, each day of operation counting as a separate offense.

Some cities and counties have shyed away from passing individual laws regarding the issue claiming it's a problem the state needs to address. But with still no action in Tallahassee last legislative session, it looks like Mexico Beach is not willing to wait.

"From everything I've seen about it it's kind of like a topless bar. It's not really something we want in the community here," said City Council Member Jack Mullen.

Council members will vote on the ordinance at their next regularly scheduled meeting November 13th at 6:00 p.m.
