More than two hundred people celebrated Armed Forces Day by raising money for disabled veterans. Hearts for Military Heroes invited veterans, families, and friends to their 5K this morning at Frank Brown park. Vet center and other local sponsors came out to help supply water and other refreshments. Organizers say the event offered everyone the chance to remember those who have served and sacrificed and those who are still serving.
Hearts for Military Heroes Board member Debbie Sasser says, "Probably three quarters of the people that are here are either military active, or vets or spouses of or retired. So it's a good thing that we are giving back to our combat veterans."
The race lasted an hour and ended with an award ceremony. Though this is only the second year the Hearts for Military Heroes board has hosted the event, they say it won't be the last. The money raised will go back to the Board of Hearts for Military Heroes to help host other events later this year.
