New Military Memorial Plans for Downtown Panama City

Tuesday, officials with the Panama City Community Redevelopment Agency began the first bit of work to put a new military memorial in downtown Panama City. For more than thirty years, an Air Force F-101 voodoo jets was on display outside the Panama City Marina, but in April it was retired.

A new memorial is in the works now, but it's a bit different than the one than the one that was there before.

"With the jet, it only really honored the Air Force, with this particular piece, we can honor all five forces respectfully," noted Carol Roberts with the Bay County Chamber of Commerce.

The new memorial will be another important piece in the plans for the new marina, slated to cost between $130-$135,000.

"I think it'll be a great place of contemplation and reflection on all the wonderful contributions our veterans have made to this community," said CRA Director William Whitson.

Now that initial plans for the memorial are put in place, Whitson says residents can expect to see construction by the end of the summer or early parts of fall.
