Several local financial institutions report there is a new banking scam that has now shown up in the the Bay County area. Bay County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating and have issued a Scam Alert.
The scam begins with either a phone call or text message. During the phone calls, after an automated message informs the customer the debit card has been suspended or deactivated, the customer is asked to press “1” to resolve the situation by giving more personal information.
In the text messages, the customer is also informed the debit card has been deactivated or suspended and they need to call (850) 388-8853 to resolve the situation.
Once the number is called, the automated message requests the customer to “enter your sixteen digit card number”. According to all the financial institutions that have contacted the BCSO, this is an organized scam and no way affiliated with or authorized by their respective banking institutions.
If you feel you have been victimized by a scam please contact your local law enforcement or the Bay County Sheriff’s Office at 747-4700.
