Panama City Beach Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison for DUI Manslaughter

A Panama City Beach man is heading to prison for DUI manslaughter.

A judge sentenced 38-year-old Joseph Christopher Acoff Friday morning to 20 years and 8 months in prison for leaving the scene of a crash that left one man dead and two severely injured.

Acoff was found guilty in may of leaving the scene of a crash involving death, DUI manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter and two counts of dui with great bodily injury.

On July 22nd of last year, Acoff's SUV hit an Isuzu Rodeo near Back Beach Road just west of Gulf Boulevard.

The rodeo flipped and threw the driver, 22-year old Phillip Drozd, out of the vehicle.

Drozd later died at the hospital.

Acoff left the scene, abandoned his vehicle and caught a cab home.

When Panama City Beach police found him several hours later he was passed out in a stairwell, his blood alcohol level twice the legal limit.

Circuit Judge Brantley Clark sentenced Acoff to prison for 20 years and 8 months, followed by nine years probation.
