Panama City Residents Upset Over Improper Tree Trimming

Power companies keep tree trimming companies busy all year long.

But every-so-often someone has a problem has a problem with the way those companies trim the trees in their neighborhood.

Kerry Silha is upset.

“They don’t have the right to just come in and take their chain saws and cut tress without education and knowledge as to what would be a better solution, a better more economical and more natural solution for our county which we take huge pride in,” said Panama City Resident Kerry Silha

So Silha and Gulf Power representatives met with Arborist, who says the tree trimmers have been topping the trees, which only creates future problems.

“When you top a main trunk of a hardwood tree, the topping cut will sprout with three, four, five, or six sprouts and they will aggressively grow, especially the first year after they’re cut, up to ten, twelve feet sometimes,” Consulting Arborist Earl Mirius.

Mirius says the quick solution would be to remove the trees and plant others that won’t grow enough to interfere with the power lines.

But Gulf Power officials say it’s not that easy.

“The customers want the tree there. They’d rather us come back with a regular program every several years and keep them trimmed away from the lines rather than take the trees, I mean everyone like trees,” said Jeff Rogers of Gulf Power.

So Rogers say tree trimming operations will continue.

"We definitely know what we're doing, we've been doing this for a long time and this is the best way...number 1, it's the safest way, it's reliable, it's economical for our customers and it ensures, this program ensures, we can keep the lights on for them," says Rogers.

Anyone with concerns about tree trimming procedures should call their utility company directly.

You're not suppose to have stuff under the light line, over in Holmes County Fla. they came around and told us not to put stuff under the light line becase they had to cut under it. So if you got stuff under it, I guess it's your fault.

I'm unhappy with the trimming because they came and trimmed on the edge of my property and dropped the limbs right on my gate, bending and deforming it and didn't say or word to me or even leave a note.
