Proposals for Privatization Begins

Bay District School officials took another step Wednesday in their effort to explore privatization.

They reviewed the proposals from four transportation companies, bidding to take over the district’s bus system. School district officials are trying to find out if outsourcing transportation and other departments like food services can save money.

Durham School Services, First Student, Go Ahead North America, and School Transportation Companies all submitted proposals. The bids all fall within the $6 million to $9 million dollar range, which is in line with current operating costs.

The Bay Educational Support Personnel Association, which represents non-instructional district employees are against the move toward privatization.

I just have one question. In this article the say the bids are in the 6-9 million dollar range which the county is running it for now. So my question is, WHY WOULD BAY DISTRICT SELL OUR FLEET OF BUSES, LEASE OUR BUILDINGS FOR $1.00 A YEAR AND ALSO PAY FOR THE PRIVATE COMPANIES FUEL????

I Think this is a bad move I have been looking at other Places that have done this and there is some shocking stores of Kids being left and after the first yr.cost went thou the over head and out of state workers brought in,Plus in cases of emergence the county did not have the ability to use the buses I will be at the board meeting with a lot of questions.

We had this situation recently, the district should have taken the deal. A company had offered everyone their jobs, was bringing in new buses, and was giving our district a savings plus cash. We blew it, we didn’t take it and then the Board slashed our programs, laid off teachers, and is even talking about a 4 day week. Don’t make the same mistake we did. Let’s save our money for educating our kids! Drivers will keep their jobs and you’ll keep your teachers.

I'm glad to hear that the 4 proposals for privatization of transportation have been received. I would love to see the pertinent data presented to the public in an open forum so all concerned parents, students, and employees can have the facts before the school board votes on this very important issue. Public imput is needed before decisions can be made. I have taken the time to read all the info on the school board website. Lets publish all the pertinent info out there for all to see. Show what it has cost for transportation to provide the service and what it will cost for the private company to provide the service. Please lets not forget we are giving away our facilities as well as still paying for the fuel for the private company. How can that possibly be cheaper than what we currently pay. I would love to see this issue put before the voters after the info is published and let them make an informed decision. What do you say elected school board members. We have nothing to hide wright?

Michael, I agree. Put it all out on the table for the public and let them vote on it. It is their money too isn't it?

Let's keep our tax dollars in Bay County and keep our children fed plus keep unemployment down. Lets hope they make the right decision to keep our fleet.

I think that the School Board should let the Parents/Public know of their thoughts of Privatization. We have spoke to a lot of parents (on our OWN time) and the parents know nothing about this. I think since it WILL affect THEIR children they have a right to know. We will continue to spread the word because it may look good for the first year but after that, NOT. If you sell our Fleet of buses WE THE COUNTY will never be able to get them back. BOARD MEMBERS, PLEASE read all the horror stories of Privatization, NOT JUST THE DOLLAR SIGNS. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE

Although I do not live in Bay County, privatizing your transportation dept would be a great mistake. Yes it fall within your financial guidelines this year but what about years to come. Once you allow your buses to be purchased by another company, if you wanted to return to District owned buses the cost would be astronomical. The issues that you have now would still be there because parents are goning to still hold the school district responsible for the safety of their children. Think twice about this issue. Will the new company hold the same standards that you currently have? Who will be driving your precious cargo to school. Thank you!
