Rabid Raccoon in Jackson County

JACKSON COUNTY-- Jackson County Health Department officials have confirmed a case of rabies.

They say a rabid raccoon fought with a dog on Highway 90 in the Cypress Community. The dog killed the raccoon. Unfortunately the dog had to be euthanized to prevent possible spread of the disease.

If you come in contact with a suspected rabid animal, consult your county health department immediately for treatment.

Also, stay away from all wild animals and any domesticated animal acting strangely.

Never shoot a biting animal in the head. It will destroy the brain and prevent rabies testing.

And remember, Florida law requires all pet owners to have their dogs and cats vaccinated against rabies.
