Southport Man Dies After Falling Off Motorized Bicycle

A Southport man is dead after he crashed his motorized bicycle.

It happened a few minutes before noon Tuesday at 4th Street east of Fourth Circle.

State troopers say 85-year-old Linwood Shiflett was riding his gas powered bicycle when it overturned.

Shiflett hit the pavement. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Neighbors who knew Shiflett say they're in shock over his death.

"It hurts knowing that it's someone close and that i know. That I just wanted to let the family know that we're praying for them and if they need anything, we're there for them," said Jacqueline Vickers, a neighbor.

The Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy to determine if Shiflett suffered some sort of medical condition to cause the crash, and if that was the cause of his death, or if he died from the impact of the crash.

The case is still under investigation.
