Panama City- Carter Hess lost his left foot last Friday after he stepped on an improvised explosive device or I.E.D. It happened in an area south of Kandahar, Afghanistan.
The exact details leading up to the explosion were still unclear Sunday, but Glenn Hess said his son had been on an extended mission of some sort when enemy forces ambushed his team. That's when Hess stepped on the device and the explosion claimed his left foot.
Hess said his son has already faced two surgeries and could go through a few more. Sunday he'll head to Germany before coming back to state's the family hoped by sometime this week.
The Hess family has politely declined any on-camera interviews, but Glenn Hess said Sunday he wanted to thank the community for its support and he expects his son to be ok.
