Surfside Teacher Recieves Presidential Award

Thursday is international "pi" day, like the mathematical symbol pi, and it's Albert Einstein's birthday.

So it was an appropriate day to honor a Surfside Middle School math and science teacher.

Kathleen Jones is the only Florida teacher to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science in the state of Florida.

Beach Mayor Gayle Oberst and Bay County Commissioner Mike Thomas proclaimed Thursday Kathleen Jones Day, as the entire school looked on.

Oberest also presented Jones the keys to the city.

"This is an amazing event and it's a wonderful honor and I’m just very proud to represent Bay County and Panama City Beach and all of my students here at Surfside," said Jones.

Jones attributes a lot of her success to local businesses, like tech companies, who've donated their time and money to her school projects involving the stem curriculum.
