Swimmer Dies 7 Hours After Recsue from Gulf

A busy afternoon for Beach Fire Rescue. In the middle of fighting the fire, crews also responded to a swimmer in distress.

Police tell NewsChannel 7, 25-year-old Ahmed Lewis from Mobile was pulled out of the water around 3:30 Thursday afternoon across from Gulf World.

People who saw Lewis floating face down in the water say friends dragged him onto the beach and that his girlfriend then performed CPR until emergency crews arrived.

First responders loaded him into the ambulance and continued CPR on the way to the hospital.

It's just shocking, like really. You're just appalled by it. It being your first time seeing something like that. It happened so fast. Being there to witness it. It just takes over your body emotionally. Its shocking. Very shocking and tragic,” said Quon Fleming.

Lewis died at 10:50 PM Thursday night at Gulf Coast Medical Center.
