The Bay County Sheriff’s Office has arrested three more people in the beating death of an elderly Lynn Haven man.
Investigators say Ashley Griffin, Kevin Jeffries, and David Challender beat 90-year-old Wallace Scott at his home on Pinetree Road on April 4, hoping he’d give them his PIN number.
“We feel certain that these are the three persons that went into the room, went into the house of Mr. Scott, bound him and beat him in hopes of gaining a PIN number from the bank,” said Captain Jimmie Stanford.
Neighbors found Scott’s body on April 6. They went to check on Scott after not seeing him for a few days.
Investigators arrested two of Scott’s former caregivers the same day his body was found. They say Sherri Mercer and Deborah Cupp used Scott's credit card.
It turns out, Mercer was named in Scott’s will. But the Sheriff’s Office says Scott planned to remove her from it during an appointment scheduled for April 8, however investigators say that she has not been tied to the robbery plot.
The murder arrests happened over the weekend. Challender and Jeffries are related to Mercer. When police searched the home of Jeffries’ father, Darrell Goldsmith, they found items taken from Scott after the beating death.
On April 12, investigators learned that Ashley Nicole Griffin was in the Bainbridge or Donaldsonville, Georgia area. They located her in the early morning hours of April 13 and brought her back to Florida.
Later that same day, Jeffries was found at a convenience store in Holmes County. Challender was arrested at his father’s home in Caryville.
Kevin Jeffries, 28 and Ashley Griffin, 28, are both from Hartford, Alabama. David Challender, 26, is from Caryville. Deputies believe the trio drove down from Atlanta to commit the crime.
