Two people could be facing the death penalty after the Bay County sheriff's office says they beat and strangled an elderly man. Another has been charged with first degree murder but has not yet had an arraignment.
At the Bay County courthouse today, 27-year-old David Ian Challender, and 28-year-olds Ashley Nichole Griffin, and Kevin Gene Jeffries appeared for their arraignment hearing. They've previously been charged with first-degree murder, armed burglary, and armed robbery.
Early last month, sheriff's investigators say the three beat and strangled 90-year-old Wallace Scott in his Lynn Haven/Northshore area home.
Investigators say claim the trio traveled from Atlanta to steal Scott's bank card and beat him until he gave them his pin number.
The Bay County grand jury then indicted the three last week in the torture and murder of the elderly man.
At today's arraignment hearing, prosecutors say they will be seeking the death penalty for David Ian Challender and Kevin Gene Jeffries. Jeffries' arraignment hearing has been rescheduled to Friday because his lawyer was not present at today’s hearing.
Pre-trials for Challender, Griffin, and Jeffries have been set for July 11th at 9 A.M. Challender and Griffin have both plead not guilty.
