Panama City - About Half of the nation's public and private school students could have bought unhealthy vending machine snacks at school during the 2009-2010 school year. A researcher who released a new study yesterday says the results show the need for more changes to make schools healthier.

The researcher says schools should either eliminate vending machines or fill them with only healthy items. Bay District School officials implemented new health policies a few years ago. They limited vending machines to only offer diet soda, water and Gatorade, and low-calorie, low-fat snacks.

However, some school officials do not want to drastically change vending machines because they generate revenue for students in-need. Mosley High School got about $4 thousand from vending machines last year and that money went to things like paying for kids to go on field trips, get them year books, or road trips for sports teams.

AGREED! I do not and will not ever allow my children to drink DIET sodas. I would rather them have "real" sugar. Do your research, and allow parents to make that decision for their own children. I love the idea of bringing pack PE. Also, whatever happened to recess time? I think I had it up to 5th grade as a kid.

I agree that what needs to happen is PE as well as moderate intake. I do not believe that each kid in school during the day is downing a 6 pack of soda or 3 or 4 bags of chips and candy bars. The average kid in school might be able to have one drink and snack during the day at school. So School is not where the problem is as much as what is being snacked on at home? If the government wants to crack down on so called unhealthy snacks and drinks then why do they allow EBT cards to be used to buy these so called bad or unhealthy products with tax payer money? Need a healthy vending machine? Well put healthy items in it but I do not believe this will solve the problem as the kids will just bring their own that they buy somewhere else or bring from home. do people not realize diet soda is worse on your body than regular soda. studies have linked the sugar substitute in it causes more weight gain than the sugar used in regular soda. instead of trying to change what is in the vending machines, how about bringing back P.E. every year of school with more calorie burning activities, like it was when I was in school, from Kindergarten to 12th grade, I had P.E. also, changing the snack foods is no substitute for lack of physical activities at both school and home.
