WALTON COUNTY-- Sheriff's officials approached County Commissioners Tuesday night about getting the money to buy some new vehicles.

They say the majority of their fleet is old and costs a lot of money to maintain.

Commissioner’s Imfeld and Chapman suggested the commission use as much as one-third of the recent BP settlement money to buy new cars if necessary.

Commissioner Cindy Meadows suggested they study the issue further.

Commissioners finally decided to give the sheriff's office almost $1 million to buy new cars.

"Our last large order was in 2009, where we purchased 61 vehicles,” said Major Joe Preston, of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. “Since that time, in 2010 we purchased 22 vehicles. At that time we have not been on a regular replacement regime or schedule for these vehicles."

Sheriff's officials say a majority of their vehicles are well over the 100,000 mile mark.
