More Recreational Space Comes to Walton County

If you build it, they will come. That's what District 5 Commissioner Cindy Meadows believes.
She says recreation is the key to development in Walton County.

"I think that when new businesses come here they look at the schools they look at the recreation facilities and they look at the cultural attractions, so I think it is an economic development and a priority, so I think general funds would be a good use of that money,” said Commissioner Meadows.

Monday Meadows announced the opening of a new soccer field and there are talks of a new sports complex being built in the county.

"The residents of South Walton have been clamoring for more recreation facilities for years so we probably need to step up to the plate,” stated Meadows.

She says the county demographic has changed recently, and more families with children are moving in, making it even more important to have recreational options.

"We started online registration years ago, and recently we have seen a 30 percent increase in all of our leagues,” said Shane Supple, Recreational Director for the county.

However, deciding where to build the new sports complex and how it will be paid for are other issues to be decided.

Commissioners are asking the public to attend their meeting Thursday if they have any land they want to sell.

The county is also being allowed to use the boys and girls club fields.
