Walton Co. Commissioners Decide to Table Three Controversial Ordinances


For months, County Commissioners and small business owners have had different opinions on proposed county ordinances.

One in particular is a parking ordinance which would affect many South Walton business and home owners.

Tuesday, Commissioners decided to table the parking ordinance, an outdoor activity ordinance and the business tax revenue ordinance.

"Seeing all the activity that has revolved around these three ordinances the past couple weeks, even months, it is the staffs opinion that it would be best if we abate any of the activities scheduled for these three,” said Larry Jones, Walton County Administrator. “Let us vent them for their application, their effectiveness and their forcibility."

Although they didn't address it directly, it appears Commissioners will also table an effort by the Walton County Small Business Association to form a Blue Ribbon Committee, made of elected officials and community members to come up with solutions.

Overall, SBA members say they’re happy with the Commission's decisions.

"We look forward to working with the County Administrator and County Attorney,” said SBA Spokesperson, Gary Shipman. “We have already reached out to other organizations, we have contacted the Sheriff, the Fire Chief and we are ready to provide you with our input on what we think the problems are with what is drafted."

Commissioners say they won't take up the ordinances again until March 1st.

In the meantime, business owners and residents can contact Commissioners with any questions, ideas or concerns they may have.
