EUGENE, Ore. -- A state lawmaker and home brewer says it's time to change Oregon law to allow beer judging competition at the state fair and other contests.

Democratic state Sen. Floyd Prozanski of Eugene told The Register-Guard he's drafting legislation to permit do-it-yourself brewers to once again transport their malty products beyond their homes.

Earlier this summer, the state Department of Justice determined that an 80-year-old law barred consumption of homemade alcoholic beverages outside the home.

But the new legal interpretation of the Prohibition-area law led the Oregon State Fair to end its 22-year-old home-brewed beer contest.
