This week's Golden Apple Winner is a 5th grade teacher at St. Andrew School. John Stephens was nominated by a student who writes: He is a fun teacher who makes it easier to learn. He makes us all feel good about learning new subjects. He keeps me going to get through rough school days when I want to give up.
This Thanksgiving these 5th graders at St. Andrew School are thankful for a teacher who marks his victories, by theirs.
“If I can make a difference in even one of their lives I feel like I’ve been successful, that is how I measure my success is on the success of my students,” said John Stephens.
“The Students know what to expect from him, he has very high expectations from the students. He lets them have little victories so they can work towards a big success,” said Principal Pat Weber.
Those successes are a key component in building a student's confidence, something Mr. Stephens excels at.
“A lot of our students have emotional and behavioral obstacles to overcome and we have to provide strategies so they can get around those obstacles so they can achieve whatever academic success they are capable of,” said Mr. Stephens.
“He comes beside us and helps us and pats us on the back and says you got this...He will encourage us,” said Castyn Wynn.
Mr. Stephens encourages me by pushing us to do our work better,” said RJ Fuller.
“It takes a team effort I have a paraprofessional that I depend on that keeps students focused also, they have to remain on task, to do that we have a positive behavior reward system here at St. Andrews,” said Mr. Stephens.
It can be as simple as a piece of candy, or extra time on the computer, bottom line, it's effective.
“I want to motivate them to the point that they can achieve whatever goals they can set for themselves,” said Mr. Stephens.
Congratulations to Mr. Stephens, this week's golden apple award winning teacher.
He really deserves the honor, he's been a really good teacher all year long, he really deserves it,” said Taylor Lewis.
