TALLAHASSEE -- Grab the ol' fishing pole and come on down to Florida.
Gov. Charlie Crist has announced two free fishing weekends with an eye on luring visitors to the state's beaches. Crist said residents and nonresidents can fish for saltwater species around the state without a license during the Memorial Day weekend, May 29 to 31, and the following weekend, June 5 to 6, the beginning of red snapper season.
The Florida governor said Friday the state's beaches are clear and the fish are biting.
The chairman of the Florida Wildlife Commission, Rodney Baretto, said Crist's announcement should help dispel some of the inaccurate perception that the massive BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has affected Florida's beaches.
