GULF SHORES, Ala. -- Jimmy Buffett, whose scheduled concert in support of coastal Alabama had to be postponed because of Tropical Storm Alex, put on a surprise performance for a crowd estimated at more than 2,000.
Buffett's sister, Lucy Buffett, informed patrons at her waterfront restaurant Wednesday night that the scheduled peformer had canceled his show, but she had a substitute. Buffett and his seven-piece Coral Reefer Band then launched a two-hour set before a growing crowd.
Buffett and a lineup of stars including Kenny Chesney and Zack Brown had planned the free concert Thursday night to help residents and businesses struggling due to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The concert for 35,000 ticketholders was postponed because of dangerous surf conditions and is now scheduled for July 11.
