Solar plane logs successful 24-hour test flight

PAYERNE, Switzerland -- A Swiss team says its experimental solar-powered plane has stayed aloft for a record 24 hours.

(AP Photo) The Solar Impulse aircraft made a record 26-hour flight on Thursday, July 08, 2010 in western Switzerland. Engineers say the ultimate goal is to fly an improved version of the aircraft around the world in five stages in 2013.

PAYERNE, Switzerland -- A Swiss team says its experimental solar-powered plane has stayed aloft for a record 24 hours.

The prototype plane is studded with 12,000 solar cells that managed to store enough energy during the day to last through the night. The team's ultimate goal is to fly an improved version of the aircraft around the world in five stages in 2013.
