Bay District Schools Working on Healthy Lunches

Posted: Fri 9:53 AM, Sep 16, 2011

Bay District School officials now reports one third of the county’s students are considered overweight.

To reverse that trend, the state is placing school lunchrooms under the Department of Agriculture next year, but local school officials are getting a jump on the changes. They’re already beginning to offer healthier menu options, like fresh fruits, more vegetables, and whole grains.

The school district raised lunch prices by 25-cents this year, which is helping pay for the higher cost of fresh vegetables and fruit.
