BOONEVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Wildlife officials say a black bear sighted in Northeast Mississippi is looking for a new home after apparently wandering out of North Alabama.
Over the weekend, the Prentiss County Sheriff's Department fielded calls about black bear sightings in the Booneville city limits and out in the county. Black bears are very rare in Northeast Mississippi, and, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, this bear has been on this path for a while now.
MDWFP bear biologist Brad Young tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal that Alabama Game and Fish officials have tracked the animal since June 4, all the way across North Alabama. Young says the bear has steadily moved west from there.
Young says the bear is now looking for new territory.
