Birmingham, Ala. mayor wants tourist transit

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Birmingham Mayor William Bell is proposing a tourist transit system to take visitors to downtown hotels and attractions in addition to the zoo, Vulcan Park and the botanical gardens.
Bell says the city recently began requesting proposals from private companies to operate what the mayor calls the "Birmingham Explorer" system. If the project is approved and funded by the City Council, a pilot program could begin within months.
The mayor says the proposal is the result of conversations earlier this year with officials at Vulcan Park, the Birmingham Zoo and the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
Bell says the need for such a system will grow with the development of projects around town, including the hotel and entertainment district at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex and the sports complex at Fair Park.
