Bonifay - This week's Golden Apple award winner is a music teacher at Bonifay Elementary School. In Mrs. Lauen's class, music means a lot more than just singing.
Rapid drumsticks, clanging cymbals, and lots of movement. There is never a dull moment in Mrs. Lauen's classroom. Bryce Etheridge nominated her for the Golden Apple award. "She has taught me well and I've been following in her footsteps," said Bryce Etheridge, a 4th grader.
Mrs. Lauen created the "Dynamic Drummers" after seeing a similar program online. It's had a powerful impact. "What I like about drumming is I love to play music. When I play music I stop being an outsider and I hope to join the world with music," said Bryce.
Of course, Mrs. Lauen teaches much more than drumming. "She is great at anything with music," said fellow 4th grader, Cheyenne Glass. "I'm able to teach different cultures and diversity through folk songs of different cultures. I am able to teach history by discussing what was going on in the world, why a composer wrote a song," said Mrs. Lauen.
Congratulations to Mrs. Lauen, this week's Golden Apple award winning teacher. "I just want them to feel the joy inside that it brings me," said Mrs. Lauen.
