Panama City - This week's Golden Apple award winner is a kindergarten teacher at Cedar Grove Elementary School in Panama City. This is only Jennifer Brown's third year in the classroom, but she is already making a lasting impression on her students.
It's obvious Jennifer Brown loves teaching kindergarten. It shows in every book she reads and every alphabet she leads. "She greets the kids daily with a smile and welcomes them into her class. She has all kinds of special activities throughout the day. The kids just love being in there, she is just a great teacher," said Phillip Campbell, the principal of Cedar Grove Elementary.
Knowing that kindergarten builds a foundation for a child's education, Brown works on building relationships with each and every student. "They are not going to try their best for you unless they know you really care about them. It helps to let them know they are safe in my classroom and that I want to understand them," said Miss Brown. "Children want to learn from people they feel loved by. Our population has some difficult home lives and sometime their best day, their best time, is here at school," said Principal Campbell.
Learning the basics is fun in Miss Brown's class. Her students practice the alphabet by both sounding out the letters and signing them. "It really helps them learn it," she said. The reading, writing, and math centers are another student favorite. Every table has a different center. Students alternate reading with an activity.
"She is like a nice teacher," said student Jonathon Davis. Congratulations to Jennifer Brown, this week's Golden Apple award winning teacher. "So do you think your teacher deserves this award?" asked Meredith TerHaar. "Yep," said student Harrison Dillulio. "How come? Well she is nice," said Harrison.
