Cozzie Pleads Not Guilty, State Seeks Death Penalty

A Seagrove Beach man accused of murdering a 15 year old Georgia tourist faces major trial delays after his attorney quit the murder case.

Judge Kelvin Wells released attorney Lenny Platteborze from representing 22 year old Steven Anthony Cozzie, after Platteborze cited a conflict of interest. Back in July, Cozzie requested a new attorney, then changed his mind during this August 2nd hearing. The court appointed Platteborze after Cozzie was charged with the June 16th kidnapping, rape and murder of 15 year old Courtney Wilkes. Sheriff’s deputies found Wilkes’ strangle and beaten body in some woods near a condominium where her family was vacationing.

Cozzie is pleading not guilty. The state is seeking the death penalty.

This is such a sad story. We have a condominium in Seagrove where the family of the young woman who was slain was staying. People who lived in the surrounding communities and knew of this young man by having children in school with him stated that he was "slow" and had difficulties in school. He, at some level, represents children who have been failed by our system, and though there is absolutely no justification to the horrendous crime that this young committed, one must give pause that there may be neurological imbalances that did not support a "breaking system" that would have stopped this atrocity from happening. These are cases where I question if the death penalty is warranted.
