TALLAHASSEE - Florida lawmakers are set to override some of Gov. Charlie Crist's vetoes.

They first, though, convened an organizational session Tuesday and formally elected Senate President Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, and House Speaker Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park.

The two leaders then called a brief special session for later in the day, starting at 3 p.m., to vote on overriding up to eight vetoes, including a $9.7 million budget item for the University of Florida's hospital. They also plan action on a couple new items including a $31 million appropriation for consumer energy rebates.

Republicans expanded their control of both chambers at the Nov. 2 election. They have an 81-39 edge over Democrats in the House and 28-12 in the Senate.
