Health Breakfast Tips

It's often called "The Most Important Meal of the Day", but all breakfasts aren't created equal. Here are some tips from the experts about what you should be eating in the morning!

We all know eating something before your day begins is a good move, but you shouldn't ruin it by making bad food choices. Dieticians say its best to dodge the donuts and divert you from the Danishes and there's a good reason to stay away from sugar!

"The worst thing you can do at breakfast is having foods that are very high in sugar. That increases our blood sugar and our insulin and then drops it down very rapidly. And that whole movement of our blood sugar makes us hungrier, quicker, we're less satisfied, we have more cravings," said Kristen Kirkpatrick, R.D.

Experts say having too much sugar in the morning will start a constant battle by your body to get your blood-sugar back up.

So, dieticians suggest having high protein foods, like egg whites or whole grain toast, bagels, or oatmeal.

A whole grain cold cereal is also a good option. You can even throw in some fresh strawberries, blueberries, or bananas for added flavor and more vitamins and minerals.

Some say the best option is a plain egg sandwich on a whole wheat English muffin.

"Eggs are associated with weight loss and increasing muscle as well because it's such a great source of lean protein and it only has 80 calories, so it's a great thing to have. A whole grain English muffin gives you those complex carbohydrates with fiber. That fiber helps to fill you up. So, you can go many hours before you need to eat again after breakfast."

And skip the salt and add a dash of pepper to your eggs instead!

A new study in The Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry suggests the component in black pepper known as piperine fights fat by blocking the formation of new fat cells.
