Kissimmee motel fire investigation pending

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities in central Florida are waiting for the charred remains of a Kissimmee motel to cool to investigate a fire that displaced scores of poor tenants.
The fire began late Sunday in one of the Vacation Lodge Maingate's 430 rooms. Heavy smoke forced officials on Monday to close a highway near the motel, just a mile from Disney's Animal Kingdom.
Six tenants and two firefighters were treated for injuries. An Orange County Sheriff's spokeswoman says one injured tenant rented the room where the fire began.
Officials say the state Fire Marshal's Office could begin investigating Tuesday. No charges have been filed.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that the county faulted the motel in April for an unmonitored sprinkler system, broken or missing exit lights, empty fire extinguishers and blocked fire hydrants.
