Lynn Haven - This week's Golden Apple award winner teaches 4th grade at Lynn Haven Elementary School. Mrs. Pickett is new to the area and has only taught at the school for two years, but her students say it didn't take them long to see her award winning qualities.
Center time is a flurry of activity in Mrs. Pickett's 4th grade classroom. She uses lots of different activities to reach students who sometimes learn best away from their desk. "It gets them up and out of their seat and moving. Especially the Smart Board where they get to slide the things around, it really help them to learn more," said Sheryl Pickett.
The small groups work on their reading and their writing, subjects Jada Ann Smith excels in. She put her writing skills to good use to nominate Mrs. Pickett. "My teacher has taught us through her rough times. She has even taught us through our bad times.
My teacher puts up with us and she still has the nerves to teach. I think my teacher deserves the Golden Apple," said Jada, reading the nomination she wrote for Mrs. Pickett. "The fact that it's from the students and it's from the parents and the fact that she nominated me and went to the trouble to do a little bit of writing about me, I was really proud, I was very excited it's quite an honor," said Mrs. Pickett.
Students and colleagues alike say Mrs. Pickett is well-deserving. "She goes the extra mile and she encourages them outside of school. She does that by showing up at their extracurricular activities and when your teacher shows up, that is just very exciting," said Debra Spradley, Lynn Haven Elementary Principal.
Congratulations to Mrs. Pickett, this week's Golden Apple award winning teacher. "Good job," said student Gavin Jones. "She is the nicest teacher I have ever had," said student Mason Miller.
