Panama City - A Mosley High School student is being honored nationally as the 2012 Air Force Child of the Year. Chelsea Rutherford, 17, is a senior who is known for her kind spirit and quick smile. We caught up with Chelsea while she was being honored during Mosley's school announcements this week.

Each year one child from each branch of the military is honored. This year Chelsea was chosen to represent Air Force families. Along with being an honor student in Mosley's Advanced Placement Program, Chelsea interns at Bay Haven Charter School, volunteers with non-profit organizations and is also very active in Mosley's Student to Student Club, which helps new students get acclimated to their new school. That's something Chelsea knows quite a bit about. Both of her parents serve in the military which makes her situation even more unique.

"I'm a former military brat myself," said Mosley High Principal Sandy Harrison. "So I can certainly relate to always being the new kid on the block. There is a lot of added stress, the older you get, the harder it is to make new friends. She is a very welcoming young lady, she fits right in and we are thrilled for her honor," said Mosley High Principal Sandy Harrison.

Chelsea will be flying to Washington D.C. next week for a recognition gala on April 5th.
