Lynn Haven - This week's Golden Apple winner teaches at Mowat Middle School in Lynn Haven. Kathryn Creel focuses on reading and language arts with 8th graders in the district's Aspire program.
If students score a 1 or a 2 on the F-CAT, it probably means they need extra attention in the areas of reading, language arts and math. That's where Aspire program teacher Kathryn Creel comes in. She uses technology and fast paced activities to engage her students. "We use a speed reading program, not to speed read but to try to increase their reading rates so they can read more quickly," said Mrs. Creel.
She calls her room a "living classroom," it's constantly connected to the world via the internet. It's all in an effort to help her students become stronger readers. "The ability to read quickly and well and be able to understand and it goes with every sort of job and everything you want to do in the future," said Mrs. Creel.
"She is a hardworking teacher, she is trying the best she can to make us move onto 9th grade," said Mikayla Anderson, one of the students who nominated Mrs. Creel. "She is like one of my favorite teachers ever in my lifetime, I am just so happy in that class all the time," said Jade Krichbaum, the other student who nominated Mrs. Creel.
"You know she really cares about her kids and they can tell that she really cares about them, you know, she worries about what goes on after school as well as what goes on in her classroom and they can tell that. She gets really close to her kids," said Mowat Principal Ed Sheffield.
Congratulations to Mrs. Creel, this week's Golden Apple award winning teacher.
