Panama City - This week's Golden Apple winner is an 8th grade science teacher at Mowat Middle School in Lynn Haven. Studies show when it comes to math and science, kids in the US are trailing other nations. Shawn Ramsey wants to change that.

"I teach science and it's really important right now. S.T.E.M. careers in the US are really taking off. There is a need in our country to catch up in the world and I really think this is the opportunity to do that, when they are in middle school, to really engender a love of science," said Shawn Ramsey.

Ramsey wants his students to be able to compete on the global level to find solutions for the energy shortage. It's that desire that keeps him motivated to teach middle schoolers every day. "Often when I tell people what I do and the age that I teach I usually get a pause and they say something to the effect of "thank you for what you do." I know it's a challenge and it is, but its rewarding to see the students move on to high school with an interest in science," said Ramsey.

"This is by far my favorite year of science," said Hailey Remington. She and Courtney Wetherbee nominated Ramsey for the Golden Apple. They say they will never look at science the same. "He is very good with his teaching skills. We always do science experiments and it's really fun to have the chance to do that kind of stuff," said Remington. "Whenever someone needs help he is always there to help you, he makes science really fun," said Courtney Wetherbee. "He is just an outstanding teacher and he is here everyday and he does his best at what he does," said Remington.
