Crews were supposed to begin construction on a new Wal Mart store in Panama City Beach this month, but city building officials say they haven’t heard from Wal Mart in months.
The store is scheduled to be built off of Powell Adams Road near Pier Park. The plans and development order were finalized in February. All Wal Mart needs to do is show up and get a permit. Company officials originally said construction would begin April 2012. Now some are concerned Wal Mart will struggle to meet the permit deadlines.
"They're only good for so long, and of course with the development order, they'll have to request an extension if they're going to be years out. I would hope they come in within the relatively short period of time to get ready to permit, I have not heard anything from them though" said Ken Thorndyke, Panama City Beach Building Department.
The city also plans to four-lane Powell Adams Road to accommodate the new store, but none of that will begin until Wal Mart starts construction.
